Essential Tips Every Dog Owner Should Know When Taking Their Dog Out for Exercise

13 Mar 2026 0 コメント

Dogs naturally love to play and run outdoors with their owners. However, with busy work schedules, many dogs spend most of their time indoors without enough space for proper exercise. As a responsible owner, you should regularly take your dog outside to keep them healthy and happy. But there are some important guidelines you need to remember to ensure your dog safety and well-being.

1. Balance Is Key: Not Too Little, Not Too Much

You should not exercise your dog based solely on your own schedule. The appropriate amount of exercise varies depending on your dog breed, age, and individual needs. Small dogs typically need about 3-4 kilometers of walking per day, while faster hunting breeds may need to run up to 16 kilometers daily.

Be careful not to overexert certain small breeds, as excessive exercise can strain their hearts. On the other hand, more active small dog breeds like Terriers may need additional exercise to stay healthy. Some hunting breeds should run for at least 15 minutes every day.

2. Always Use a Leash and Bring Water

The leash is your dog lifeline. Using a leash when walking your dog shows respect for others while also protecting your furry friend from danger. In busy urban streets, keeping your dog leashed prevents potential car accidents, fights with other dogs, and prevents your dog from biting strangers.

Always clean up after your dog if they relieve themselves during the walk. Being a responsible pet owner means keeping public spaces clean. Additionally, bring enough water for your dog, especially on hot days, to prevent dehydration.

3. Socializing with Other Dogs: Be Polite

Vary your walking routes rather than following the same path every day. When your dog interacts with other dogs, observe their body language to ensure friendly encounters. Avoid letting your dog steal toys from other dogs, as this can lead to conflicts.

Dogs have protective instincts, and toy disputes can quickly escalate into serious fights. These confrontations can also lead to arguments between owners. Always monitor your dog behavior and intervene if you notice any signs of aggression.

4. Wait Before Feeding or Bathing After Exercise

After exercise, it is not recommended to feed your dog or give them a bath immediately. Instead, use a towel to dry their coat thoroughly and brush off any dirt or debris. This helps prevent skin irritations and keeps your dog comfortable.

There are many fun activities you can do with your dog during exercise. Feel free to get creative and adapt games to your dog personality and preferences. Regular exercise will help your canine companion maintain a healthy weight and happy disposition!
