Bichon Frise Lifespan and Caring for a Senior Dog

The American Kennel Club lists a Bichon Frise lifespan of 14 to 15 years. This is a breed guide, not a prediction for an individual dog. Health and function matter more than assigning every Bichon a fixed birthday for becoming senior.

When is a Bichon considered senior?

AAHA describes the senior stage in relation to the later part of a dog's estimated lifespan, with variation between dogs and breeds. Ask your vet when to increase check-ups and which screening tests suit your dog. A calendar alone cannot explain a new symptom.

Changes to discuss with your vet

Record difficulty getting up, shorter walks, altered sleep, new house-soiling, changes in thirst or appetite and weight loss or gain. Loose teeth, sore gums and difficulty chewing need assessment; they should not be dismissed as harmless aging. Cloudy eyes or a change in vision also deserve examination.

Know when not to wait

Breathing difficulty, collapse, inability to urinate, severe pain or sudden loss of vision needs urgent veterinary attention. For other new changes, contact your clinic for advice on timing. Videos of movement and a dated symptom diary can help describe what happens at home.

Make daily life comfortable

Keep comfortable bedding easy to reach and use secure nonslip surfaces where your dog struggles. Adjust walks to their ability, with opportunities to sniff and rest. Continue gentle grooming and check beneath the Bichon's curls for mats or skin changes. Avoid forcing exercise through limping or fatigue.

Review food and dental care individually

An older dog doing well on a complete adult diet does not automatically need a senior-labelled food. Review weight, muscle condition and any illness with your vet. Do not add calcium-rich treats or supplements as an aging remedy. Softer food may help some dogs eat, but it does not treat dental pain. Ask for a dental and nutrition plan matched to your dog.
