American Bully Care Guide: Temperament, Health & UK Rules

The American Bully is a companion breed with several size varieties, but appearance and temperament vary widely. A muscular build is not proof of aggression, and a friendly puppy is not a guarantee of easy adult behaviour. Responsible ownership starts with legal checks, health-conscious sourcing, humane training and realistic management.
Is an American Bully a good fit?
Consider the individual dog’s adult size, strength, history and ability to settle. Owners need time for daily training, controlled exercise, veterinary care and secure management. Housing, landlord, insurer and travel restrictions may also apply.
A reputable breeder or rescue should be transparent about adult temperament, health history and return support. Avoid sellers promoting extreme size, exaggerated muscle, very short muzzles or “rare” traits at the expense of sound movement and breathing.
Temperament and socialisation
American Bullies are often selected for companionship, but every dog is an individual. Early, positive exposure to people, environments and routine handling can help. Socialisation does not mean forcing a puppy to greet everyone; it means creating safe experiences and teaching calm neutrality.
Use reward-based training for loose-lead walking, recall, settling, polite greetings and muzzle comfort. Because a powerful dog can be difficult to manage physically, teach skills before problems develop.
Exercise without overloading the dog
Provide regular walks, sniffing, play and training, adjusted for age and build. Growing puppies should not be pushed into repetitive high-impact exercise. Dogs with very heavy bodies or short muzzles can overheat, so avoid hard work in warm weather and stop for excessive panting, weakness or noisy breathing.
Health checks to discuss
- Hips and elbows: joint disease can cause pain and reduced mobility.
- Heart: ask what cardiac screening has been completed.
- Airway and heat tolerance: especially for short-muzzled or very broad-headed dogs.
- Skin and allergies: recurrent itching and ear disease need veterinary diagnosis.
- Eyes and teeth: include them in routine preventive care.
Choose a complete, balanced diet for the dog’s life stage and maintain a lean body condition. Extra protein does not create healthy muscle if total calories are excessive. Avoid unbalanced raw or homemade diets unless formulated with a qualified veterinary nutritionist.
Grooming and daily care
The short coat still benefits from weekly brushing and skin checks. Keep nails comfortable, clean skin folds if present, and investigate redness, odour or repeated scratching rather than masking it with home remedies.
Current UK XL Bully rules
Rules differ across England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. In England and Wales, exempted XL Bully dogs must be microchipped, neutered, securely kept, and kept on a lead and muzzled in public. Buying, selling or transferring ownership is prohibited. Government guidance was updated in July 2026, so always use the official page rather than an old social post or blog.
If you are unsure whether a dog may meet the legal type standard, obtain qualified local legal and enforcement guidance before making ownership or travel decisions.
Frequently asked questions
Are American Bullies naturally aggressive?
No single label predicts an individual dog’s behaviour. Genetics, health, learning and management all matter. Strength and legal responsibilities still require careful ownership.
Is every American Bully an XL Bully under UK law?
No, but some may meet the XL Bully type definition. Enforcement is based on physical characteristics rather than registration papers alone.
Do American Bullies need a high-protein homemade diet?
No. They need a complete and balanced diet in appropriate calories. Homemade diets require professional formulation to avoid deficiencies.
